Welcome to 5th Grade Science!
Welcome! My name is Mr. Lightfoot, and I teach 5th Grade Science here at Troup Elementary. While this is my first year in Troup ISD, I’ve been in education for over a decade. I returned to teaching because I truly enjoy helping young people succeed—and science is the perfect subject for that. It’s all about exploring, discovering, and understanding the world around us.
My classroom is active and hands-on. Students participate in labs, projects, and collaborative learning that help them build real-world skills. I focus on safety, structure, and high expectations, but also flexibility—because not everyone learns the same way. I believe in curiosity, effort, and developing habits that lead to long-term success.
Some of my favorite topics to teach include ecosystems, geology, and Earth science. After growing up in East Texas, I spent seven years living in the Mojave Desert, and I love comparing those two environments with students. There’s always something new to discover in science.
I’m proud to say that my wife also teaches at Troup Elementary, and all six of our children attend school in the district. In our free time, we love camping, hiking, and exploring nature—most recently, I completed a 16-mile solo hike in the Arkansas wilderness.
To my students: I will push you to do your best, because I believe in your potential.
To parents: I’m on your team. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Let’s make it a great year!
