Welcome to 5th Grade Writing and Social Studies!

Welcome!

My name is Mr. Lightfoot, and I teach 5th Grade Writing and Social Studies here at Troup Elementary. This is my second year in Troup ISD. I've been teaching for over a decade, and I love helping young people succeed. Writing and social studies let us explore ideas, understand our world, and learn to communicate what we discover.

My classroom is active and discussion-based. Students work on research projects, analyze primary sources, and write about what they learn. I focus on respect, curiosity, and high expectations—but I also know that not everyone learns the same way. I believe in curiosity, effort, and building habits that lead to success.

I love teaching about the history of the United States and North America. There's something special about helping students discover the stories and events that shaped our country. After growing up in East Texas, I spent seven years living in the Mojave Desert. I enjoy comparing those two regions with students and exploring how different places shape people's lives.

I'm proud that my wife also teaches at Troup Elementary, and all six of our children attend school in the district. In our free time, we love camping and exploring. Recently, I took my boys on a road trip through the American West—visiting New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, California, and Arizona to see the Redwoods. These adventures remind me why curiosity about our country and the world matters.

Let's make it a great year!
